Circle of Practice: Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being – 1 session per month for 8 months from 6:30 – 8:00pm.
What is a Communities of Practice (CoP) or Circle of Practice? – A Community of Practice (CoP) is a group of individuals with a shared interest or goal who come together to learn, collaborate, and enhance their skills and knowledge through regular interactions and shared experiences. These communities create a space where members can engage in meaningful discussions, exchange best practices, and develop professionally in a supportive and collaborative environment. This Indigenous Circle of Practice is offering a safe way to connect and explore Indigenous ways of knowing and being on your personal and professional journey towards Reconciliation with Purpose, Becoming Urban Kin, A pathway to developing and implementing a new, healing-informed, transformational collaboration framework. Since its inception in 2003, Ska:na Family Learning Centre (SFLC) has been engaged with its partners in innovative, culturally grounded initiatives to set the foundations for a “lifetime of learning”, creating environments of active learning for the youngest in the society. Through the work of its founding members, and their like-minded collaborators, the ideas and philosophy behind the name of Ska:na (which in Oneida means “peace”), together with all the wise practices and lessons in education and learning acquired in two decades, provide a strong foundation for the ground-breaking work in truth and reconciliation. Responding to the 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued 94 calls to action, defining recommendations for every level of government, Early Years and Child Care organization and other institutions. The Reconciliation with Purpose transformative framework is grounded in research. This work, which is done in the region by Indigenous experts, scholars, activists, and Elders associated with SFLC, is intended to heal the whole community, and bring Indigenous and non-indigenous partners to a safe place of shared wellness. Practical solutions being offered are true to cultural principles, values, and teachings, which direct and ground all reconciliation actions, projects, and initiatives.
